Between 1883-1896, Mary Baker Eddy wrote many articles, letters, and poems to support and encourage the growing membership of the First Church of Christ, Scientist she founded. Many were first published in The Christian Science Journal. Mary Baker Eddy published them as this separate book, Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896. She suspended all Christian Science teaching for one year, urging the study of this book in its place.
